THE ORIGINS OF AKILI AFYA

The use of the Swahili term “Akili-afya” in mental health discourse has gained popularity in East Africa as a way to promote awareness and reduce stigma surrounding mental health issues. 

The Taala Foundation’s program aims to provide context-specific and holistic approaches to mental health, tailored to specific cultural backgrounds, to empower GSD individuals through evidence-based practices and accessible resources. 

The goal is to foster an inclusive, accepting, and supportive environment, promoting self-awareness, personal growth, and resilience for more fulfilling lives.

RapidMind Support Services (RSS) 2020 onward

The Taala Foundation’s RapidMind Support Services provide critical mental health support and care specifically tailored for GSD persons. Recognising the unique challenges and experiences of GSD individuals, the program offers swift assistance to those facing mental health crises.

To address the diverse needs of GSD persons, RapidMind Support Services include access to emergency counselling and therapy. These services played an essential role in helping over 90 persons between 2020 and 2022, who were arbitrarily arrested and detained en masse during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown measures.

Additionally, the Taala Foundation has initiated a Psychological First Aid Training program, which equips GSD individuals with the necessary skills and knowledge to support their peers in the aftermath of traumatic events. The training covers essential topics such as crisis management, active listening, and trauma-informed care while emphasiaing the unique needs and experiences of​

The Taala Fireplace- 2019

A safe space for healing, love, mental health and self-care among youth on the margins. The Taala Fireplace fosters conversations and practices for personal and community growth as well as overall wellness.
